How to Hanging a Flag on a Pole

Such flags can be a little trickier to work with, but it’s still possible to hang them on a pole with the right equipment.

By inspecting your flag, you can work out which mounting method will work the best. Look along the side of the flag to see if the fabric folds around to form a pocket or if there are any grommets you can use. Then, choose an appropriate hanging method from the list below.

If your flag has a built-in pole pocket, you’re in luck. Such flags are very straightforward to hang. Indeed, if you want to know how to hang a flag on pole with minimal fuss, it’s best to buy flags with pole pockets built in. Here’s how to use them.

1. Slide the end of the pole into the pole pocket.
2. Feed the pole further into the pocket until you’re satisfied with the flag’s position.

Note: This method works best with poles that are either horizontal or at a 45-degree angle. On vertical poles, the flag may slip down due to gravity. So, if you intend to hang your flag from an upright pole, it’s better to use a different method.

If the flag you want to hang has grommets, there are a couple of ways to suspend it from a pole. An easy option is to use some simple cable ties or zip ties. Typically used for tying cables together, these little ties are cheap and easy to work with.

1. Position your flag beside the pole.
2. Place a cable tie through one of the grommets, wrap it around the pole, and tighten it to secure the flag in place.
3. Repeat the process for the second grommet and any additional grommets on your flag.

Another way to hang a flag with grommets is by using D-rings or snap hooks. This method is the best one to choose if you want to hoist the flag up a tall pole with the aid of a rope.

1. Measure the distance between the top and bottom grommets on your flag. You’ll need to position the hooks the same distance apart on your rope.
2. Run a loop of the rope through the eye of each hook.
3. Pull the loop over the hook and tighten it to secure the rope in position.
4. Clip your hooks or D-rings into the grommets of the flag.

If your flag doesn’t have grommets or pole pockets, you’ll need to use a different method. Fortunately, banner clips can be snapped directly onto the side of the flag material. Here’s how to use them:

1. Prepare the first clip with the bottom side facing you.
2. Push the teeth down and pull the ends of the clip apart.
3. Flip the clip over and put the extended end section on the part of the flag you wish to attach it to.
4. Push the upper part of the clip down and over the flag material. Listen for the sound of the teeth clicking into place.
5. Repeat the process for your second clip (and any additional clips, if needed).

Once the clips are attached, you can use them just like grommets to attach your flag to a pole. To do this, you can feed cable ties through the holes and secure them in place around the pole. Alternatively, you can attach your flag to a rope with the aid of D-rings or snap hooks, as follows:

1. Measure the space between the two clips. Make sure you use that same distance when measuring your rope.
2. Run a loop of rope through the eye of each hook or ring.
3. Pull the loop over the top of the hook/ring and draw it tight.
4. Attach your hooks or rings to the banner clips of your flag.
